I arrived in the village of Panajachel, on the shores of Lago de Atitlán, in October 2005.
After 4 days of heavy rain caused by Hurricane Stan, the lake started rising and the river burst its banks. Many houses collapsed and many lifes were lost in the area. Neighbouring villages were struck by landslides and access roads were blocked by debris.
We were evacuated with the help of the military after one week but I often think about the families who lost their homes and loved ones and how even after such devastation they continue their day to day lives with dignity, pride and always with a welcoming smile on their face.
